The encryption features "were simultaneously added to the new beta versions of the WinZip E-Mail Attachment Add-On for Outlook and the WinZip Command Line Support Add-On", the company states.
WinZip claims immense popularity, with nearly 100 million copies of WinZip downloaded from CNET`s download.com Web site alone.
WinZip`s new encryption capabilities support 128- and 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption for data security. The US National Institute of Standards and Technology selected AES as the standard for both governmental and private data encryption.
Other enhancements include support for 64-bit extensions to the Zip file format, and support for the "enhanced deflate" compression method.
WinZip Computing is publishing full specifications of its AES encryption support, allowing authors of other Zip file utilities to adopt the AES encryption format as implemented by WinZip Computing.
Individual copies of WinZip are $29, and site licence pricing is available. All registered users of earlier English-language versions of WinZip will be able to download a free upgrade to WinZip 9.0. The official release of WinZip 9.0 is scheduled for later this year.
