Credit card recharge for prepaid airtime

Vodacom said yesterday that its prepaid cellular subscribers are now able to use their credit cards to recharge their airtime. Joan Joffe, group executive (corporate affairs) of Vodacom, said the service was developed with Cointel, who invested more than R4 million in developing multiple fraud controls. Vodacom said it expects a strong demand for the service from corporates, where a group of users can be linked to a company`s credit card and recharged simultaneously or individually once a month.

One million user milestone reached

Cellular network operator Vodacom said it will invest R2,5 billion to increase capacity on its network which has reached one million active users. Vodacom Group chief executive Alan Knott-Craig said the investment is self-funded and will be spent mostly on infrastructural equipment supplied by Alcatel, Motorola and Siemens. It`s aimed at creating capacity for two million users by this time next year, said Knott-Craig.

Local product development behind international cellular products

Siemens Mobile Networks said it has developed locally, together with Cape Town-based firm Psitek, two genuine devices for the cellular industry. The products, a telephone handset called "Euroset GSM" and a connection box or access unit called "Combiset GSM", are already being deployed by privatised telecommunications companies, such as Germany. The devices were launched at the recent CeBit exhibition in Hanover. South Africans will be able to see them at Africa Telecom `98 to be held at Nasrec in May.
