SA's second cellphone operator, MTN, has surpassed the 15 million mark in terms of members of its three-year-strong loyalty programme, 1-4-1.

The opt-in loyalty programme, launched on 26 February 2009, rewards both prepaid and contract customers with airtime, SMS bundles and data bundles via a points system.

MTN subscribers who sign up for the service earn one point for every R1 spent, as well as a point for every day they are active on the MTN network. Points can be exchanged for recharge purposes, or transferred to another MTN subscriber for the same use.

Chief marketing officer of MTN SA, Serame Taukobong, says MTN 1-4-1 members have received over R76 million worth of points to date, with most of those points being exchanged for airtime. “Members have shown a particular preference for trading points for airtime and SMS, with over 85% of redemptions being utilised for this purpose.”

To register for the loyalty programme, MTN subscribers need to dial *141*9#, select the registration option and enter a valid South African identification number.
