Liberia grants WiMAX license

The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has granted a 15-year WiMax license to West Africa Telecommunications (WAT), reports Cellular-News.

LTA chairperson Angelique Weeks says this marks the beginning of an opportunity for constructive engagement in the expansion of the telecommunications sector in Liberia.

WAT is the second company to be granted a WiMax license in Liberia since the standardisation of the industry, according to the LTA.

Bharti rolls out 3G network in Malawi

The Malawi unit of Bharti Airtel rolled out a 3G network in the region, as part of the Indian telecom firm's push to expand in fast-growing Africa, states Reuters Africa.

Bharti now owns mobile operators in 15 African countries, following a $9 billion deal with Kuwait's Zain this year, and has ramped up spending across the continent to challenge dominant player MTN Group.

The Bharti unit, Zain Malawi, is the biggest mobile phone operator in the southern African nation. Bharti plans to spend $100 million in the next three years on network expansion in the country.

Algeria hits Orascom unit

Algeria has decided to demand new back-taxes from Orascom Telecom's local unit, deepening the firm's problems as it prepares to sell the unit to the Algerian state, says International Business Times.

Algeria's central bank has also notified justice officials about a suspected false declaration by the director-general of the Algerian unit relating to its financial operations.

Orascom Telecom agreed to talks on selling Djezzy to the Algerian state after the unit was hit with previous back-tax claims totalling over $600 million.
