The Gauteng Department of Education's (GDE's) online registration portal for next year's grades one and eight learner intake is now live.

This comes after the GDE decided to postpone applications by one week, following a request made by the Federation of Associations of Governing Bodies of South African Schools (FEDSAS), Suid-Afrikaanse Onderwysunie and other school governing body associations.

The department says a meeting was convened with FEDSAS, where the functionality of the online system was demonstrated. In addition, it made it possible for stakeholders and interested parties to test the system, to allay fears.

"The department has availed to parents a step-by-step user guide and a detailed video tutorial to clarify admissions processes. The video tutorial is available on the department's Web site. Parents are encouraged to continue to view the video tutorial to familiarise themselves with the admissions processes and rules.

"Parents will also be assisted with applications at all public ordinary schools, district offices and the head office. Community centres and public libraries have been prepared as walk-in centres to assist parents with applications from 08:00 to 16:00 during school days. A list of walk-in centres with contact details and addresses is provided."

The GDE has been running its online admissions system since 2016, and despite hiccups in the past, the department has remained resolute that the online application system is the way to go.

It decided to introduce the system to handle large volumes of applications, as well as allow for a transparent and fair school application process for those learners starting grades one and eight.

The provincial education department has reiterated admissions are a three-phase process made up of registration and application, placement of learners and admission to a school.

According to the GDE, the online system will accept applications until 22 July, at midnight.
