Chip maker, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is aggressively strengthening its foothold in the consumer graphics and mobile computing market.

This is according to Jaco Laubscher, AMD country manager for sub-Saharan Africa, who says 2012 will be an aggressive year for AMD. He says AMD expects a huge uptake of the HD 7970 this year, as demand for the graphics card outweighs its availability.

“AMD's current market share, in terms of graphics cards in SA, is between 36% and 39%, and our strategy is to aggressively take it to market. We will be driving more road shows and competitions in coming months,” notes Laubscher.

AMD this month unveiled the Radeo HD 7970 graphics card for desktop PCs, which it touts as the world's fastest single graphics processing unit (GPU) graphics card and the only GPU based on 28nm production technology.

The HD 7970 uses AMD's new Graphics Core Next Architecture that provides faster performance by up to 150% over the prior generation of graphics cards. AMD has also enhanced its Eyefinity technology that enables gamers and desktop enthusiasts to connect up to six displays to one graphics card and deliver immersive stereoscopic 3D experiences.

AMD also this month rolled out the Radeon HD 7000M notebook graphics cards as part of its push into the mobile gaming market.

“Power efficiency is key for the 7000M notebook graphics card range. Notebooks will be able to run between 20% and 30% longer because of this technology.”

Laubscher adds: “More than ever, our focus has turned to give PC gamers the best possible gaming experience. We are also getting more involved with software and game developers, as well as schools, as part of efforts to promote game development.”
