Utility and value for money player Onyx sees tablets enter SA market

Johannesburg, 07 Sep 2012

Tarsus Technologies has announced the local availability of the Apollo, Aura, Cronos, Iris and Calypso, five new models of Android-based tablets from Onyx that are focused on utility and value for money.

All five tablets feature capacitive LCD touch-screens, speedy 1GHz or better processors, 16GB of storage and the Android operating system, laying a great foundation for a number of different uses and applications.

Slight differences do exist between the models, most notably in the number of networking options they support, their screen sizes, version of the Android operating system supported, and number/resolution of cameras.

"With Onyx's focus so squarely fixed on price, however, resellers are unlikely to find a range of tablets that's as versatile and good value for money as these," Darryl Squara, general manager at Tarsus, says.

Delving into specifics, Squara says the Apollo is Onyx's entry-level unit and features a seven-inch capacitive LCD touch-screen, built-in WiFi and a front-facing 1.3MP camera for video conferencing.

"Onyx's Aura is one step up from the Apollo and is as such identical to its sibling in every way except for the inclusion of a 3G radio for untethered use while on the road," Squara explains.

The Cronos is Onyx's mid-range model, and as such, kicks the Aura's value proposition up in two regards, namely the inclusion of a 3G hotspot capability (using tethering) and two cameras, a front-facing 2MP unit for video conferencing and a rear-facing 2MP camera for video recording and image capture.

"Boasting greater screen real estate, Onyx's Iris features an eight-inch capacitive LCD touch-screen and over 25 preloaded applications, including Facebook, Skype, Twitter, YouTube, Google Maps, Angry Birds, a PDF Reader, Whatsapp Messenger, eBook Reader and Documents To Go," Squara says.

And rounding the range out, Squara says the Calypso is Onyx's 9.7-inch offering, with similar capabilities to some of the more popular 10-inch Android tablets on the market, but is encased in a high-quality aluminium shell and comes in at a far more cost-conscious price point than market peers.

"We've also gone to great lengths to ensure that customers are happy with their tablets long after the date of purchase," Squara says.

"That's the reason we've included a two-year manufacturer warranty with each Onyx tablet and kicked this up a level with a one-year Tarsus Accident Guard (TAG) cover, which safeguards against accidental damage.

"The TAG warranty means customers no longer need to be afraid of unforeseen damage to their hardware, financial loss due to identity theft in the event that their tablet gets stolen, or the cost of data loss in the event of a virus attack.

"It's a big deal and something we're looking forward to our resellers welcoming with great interest," Squara concludes.
