ZTE, a global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, is sponsoring five female black students to study for three- to four-year IT degrees at the University of the Witwatersrand.

The sponsorship includes: tuition, prescribed books, stationery, residence accommodation, all meals and a laptop for each student. The financial support of ZTE will enable these five young women to focus solely on their studies.

With an unacceptably high unemployment rate in South Africa, ZTE invests in the youth through its socioeconomic development (SED) contributions. ZTE aims to contribute to the building of a competent and well-trained workforce that increases technology skills capacity within South Africa and globally.

ZTE is committed to changing lives, one at a time.

The "Power of One", a partnership initiative with the Sigma Group, empowers and inspires individuals to make a meaningful contribution to their quality of life, businesses, transformation and society as a whole.

Nikky Dong Cheng, ZTE operations director, emphasised the importance of the role of young women in the traditionally male-dominated telecommunications industry. "Not only does this sponsorship assist the students to acquire critical new skills, but their lives will change as they participate in the country's economy, thereby contributing to the success of South Africa," she says.

Cheng emphasises ZTE's commitment to the greater community in SA. "We believe transformation gives people hope and it enables ZTE to make a meaningful difference in the telecommunications and technology industries, as well as the country as a whole."
