Goal achieved! Green Office has managed to 'close the loop'

KwaZulu Natal, 06 Mar 2019

'Going green', 'eco-friendly' and 'sustainability' are all buzzwords in businesses these days. We take advantage of daily conveniences, without always considering the impact it has on the earth's resources. Since inception, Green Office has prided itself in prioritising the environment.

Green Office was founded in 1997 with the purpose of making businesses more efficient and sustainable. The company has progressed from a printer cartridge supply-based company to a document solutions organisation, focused on managed print services (MPS) and business process optimisation (BPO).

Green Office collects cartridge waste to be re-used or recycled, which forms part of the MPS solution.

In 2010, it was observed that Green Office was disposing of a fair amount of redundant cartridge waste to landfill. The company's aim was to therefore recycle redundant or damaged cartridges that could not be re-used, and that would otherwise end up in landfill. To address this, Green ABLE, a non-profit company that employs previously disadvantaged persons with disabilities, was launched in 2012.

Most of the Green ABLE employees have not been fortunate enough to complete secondary schooling. In South Africa, the unemployment rate is estimated to be a staggering 99% among the disabled community. Employees undergo training to upskill themselves and to enable improved accessibility to the job market.

At Green ABLE, these redundant printer cartridges are dismantled into their recyclable components, mainly aluminium, mild steel and plastic. The aluminium and mild steel are sold to be recycled elsewhere, while the plastic is cleaned, crushed, then extruded and cut into pellets that can be injection moulded.

In 2016, Green Office set a goal to design and manufacture products using the recycled cartridge plastic. Here, the idea of a portable laptop stand, called the 'eezigo Designed for mobility' laptop stand was born. It is an innovative product that was designed with portability and convenience in mind and is compact and user friendly.

Green Office is proud that it has achieved its goal of 'closing the loop', by giving printer cartridge plastic waste a second lease on life.

The release of the 'eezigo Designed for mobility' laptop stand will allow Green Office to make a more meaningful, positive impact on the environment, in addition to providing an ergonomic solution for laptop users.
