Acer targets tablet market

Johannesburg, 11 Mar 2011

PC manufacturer Acer has partnered with IT distributor Rectron in a bid to drive tablet and smartphone sales in the local consumer and small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) market.

Last month, Acer partnered with Mustek, joining local distributors Axiz and Tarsus.

Damien Durrant, Acer country sales manager, says the company is striving to nab the number one position in the worldwide mobility market.

He says Acer will make a play in the tablet application store market. The company is in discussions with local content publishers to distribute its applications for tablet PCs and smartphones by the end of the year.

This will also help speed up sales of its new dual touch-screen Iconia Tab, says Durrant.

He says Acer will bolster its channel with new acquisitions and training, and will create a brand awareness campaign in coming months, to help partners close customer deals.

“We are seeing phenomenal growth in the SME and consumer space. Content creation is increasing as broadband data rates drop. People are consuming more information on multiple devices with the proliferation of social networking,” notes Durrant.

Android smartphones have also been dominating the market, he adds. “Around 80% of mobile devices are being shipped with Android.”
