Solar energy powers new PCs
This new line-up is best suited for areas that encounter frequent power cuts or villages that do not have electricity.
Cnet reports that according to the India-based company, the 74W solar panel and battery combo is not only able to fully power the Simmtronics Solar PC, but also store enough charge for the computer to run for three to four days without sunlight.
To keep the power usage down, the Solar PC uses a Via C7 1.6GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD and a 15.6-inch LED monitor. The system runs on Linux.
According to Earthtechling.com, Simmtronics said it plans to extend its solar technology to laptops, tablets and netbooks as well as desktop PCs, with the goal of being the first Indian company to unveil solar-based IT products nationwide.
Pricing for the solar desktop PC is set at Rs 29 999, which works out to around $675. It is said the PC is available “across the world” through the company's authorised channel partners.
