AlphaWorks investigates emerging software

Semantic Web, rapid application development, data visualisation and health-care applications are just some of the emerging software types being investigated by IBM's alphaWorks division, states ZNet Asia.

Established in 1996, alphaWorks is a Web community for developers to preview and collaborate on emerging technology from IBM's research labs and turn them into commercial products.

The IT giant claims much of alphaWorks's activity is aimed at developing new software types and standards, particularly around open-source principles.

Recession encourages risk management

As the economy slows down, more emerging technology firms are recognising the importance of managing risks associated with recessions. This was the main theme at the monthly Women's Network Roundtable discussion in August, hosted by the California Women's Network and Aon Corporation, reports Emailwire.

Commenting on the research, Julie Davis, executive vice-president of Aon, says, "It is interesting to observe leaders in emerging technology firms during recessionary times. Our experience shows that a majority of our clients are taking steps to re-energise and re-focus their business in certain areas."

Davis further commented, "Technology firms of all sizes are focused on reducing their recession exposures and our experience reflects a growing trend of small, emerging technology firms seeking assistance from their insurance and risk advisors to help them manage risks during the recession."

Emerging technology centre breaks ground

West Kentucky Community and Technical College in Paducah, Kentucky, in the US, has broken ground on its new $20 million Emerging Technology Centre and Fred Paxton Engineering Wing, according to WKYX.

The centre will provide the region with a facility equipped to meet the needs of today's technically advanced workforce.

It will offer advance engineering technology including mechatronics, robotics, rapid prototyping and metrology.
