Namibian privately owned telecoms operator, Paratus Telecommunications has appointed Colwyn van Rensburg as its new chief commercial officer. The company says the move is part of its commitment to capture the African market.

Van Rensburg will be responsible for driving business throughout the continent. He will required to implement the company's objectives in a variety of its projects and also to assist various managers. The company describes him as a huge asset. "He has the vision to take Paratus Telecom to a new level. He has vast experience, having established Paratus Telecom in Zambia whilst also overseeing the implementation and stabilisation of the Voice Platform at Paratus Telecom Namibia," says Paratus Telecom CEO Barney Harmse.

Harmse believes Van Rensburg's business degree, his articles from PricewaterhouseCoopers and his vast industry experience make him an ideal candidate. After completing his studies, Van Rensburg moved into the business world where he became the MD of Siltek Distribution Dynamics Namibia in the late 1990s.

"I was then based in the UK for nine years obtaining further exposure to telecoms and business related projects before returning to Namibia to join the Internet Technologies Group (ITG) as a business developer for Africa. This was before ITG become Paratus Telecom," says Van Rensburg.

"I then took a sabbatical to recharge the batteries while doing some consulting work on a part-time basis for the group. I missed the fast-paced environment and re-joined the Paratus family," he adds.

Founded as ITG in Namibia 2005, the company says it is the largest privately owned Pan-African telecoms operator. Its head offices are in Windhoek, Namibia. It is the first privately and 100% Namibian owned telecommunications operator.

The group had a turnover of R1 billion last year and has a total budget for Africa of $110 million. It has offices in Angola, Botswana, Zambia and South Africa and delivers products and services to 22 African countries.
