Digital Shadows shines light on Web Shadows with new 'Shadow Search' digital risk management capabilities

Increased proactive functionality enabling faster hands-on access to the latest threat data.

Johannesburg, 18 May 2018

Digital Shadows, the leader in digital risk management and relevant threat intelligence, has announced its new "Shadow Search" capability, available as part of its flagship, award-winning SearchLight service.

Shadow Search enables instant access to Digital Shadows' comprehensive collection of historical and evolving threat intelligence assets, and expert security sources, including leading security blogs and news, enabling SearchLight subscribers the ability to better manage third-party risk, investigate security incidents, monitor trends, and enrich threat hunting of client-specific indicators and threat actors jeopardising their business, brand and reputation.

"Too many security and IT teams suffer from 'alert fatigue' and diminished response times, hampered by having to sift through multiple dashboards and data sets for the right data necessary to act quickly before an attack or cyber security incident's worst consequences occur," said Digital Shadows Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer James Chappell.

"The powerful and intuitive Shadow Search interface queries Digital Shadows' vast repository of SearchLight data observed from the cyber crime underground and across the open, deep and dark Web, to deliver fast and actionable insights on everything from adversary groups and attack techniques, to indicators and exploits. Our clients can therefore benefit from hands-on access to raw threat data with real-time search capability for security teams."

Shadow Search combines expert security resources and assessments, threat intelligence, and structured technical data and content from the open deep and dark Web into an innovative precision search engine, returning detailed results according to technical, geopolitical, industry sector and other search terms. Scouring anonymous and underground Internet forums where threat actors conduct business, and information shared among the global stakeholder community, Shadow Search delivers data hard to find anywhere else to recoup valuable time for understaffed security operations teams and overwhelmed threat analysts.

Shadow Search accelerates either fast access or hands-on access to intelligence collection and analysis with practical and powerful features, including:

* A vast and ever-expanding cache of structured and unstructured data available for search;
* Ability to view recent searches, save searches and subscribe to alerts on new matches;
* New extended search syntax and rich contextual filters;
* Easy to interpret search results categorised by timing, threat level, associations and more;
* A dedicated search area to run multiple searches and explore detailed results; and
* The ability to export results in Excel and JSON as well as via API and correlate further to enrich investigations/research.

In Gartner's November 2017 report: Innovation Insight for Security Orchestration, Automation and Response, Research VP Craig Lawson states: "Security and risk management leaders responsible for security monitoring and operations face an increasingly challenging world. Attackers are improving their ability to bypass traditional blocking and prevention security technologies, and end-users continue to fall victim to attackers through social engineering methods, while still failing to carry out basic security practices well. While mean time to detect threats may be trending down across industries, it still takes way too long. Once detected, the ability to respond to, and remediate, those threats is still a challenge for most organisations."

Digital Shadows will be showcasing its products and innovative technologies at the ITWeb Security Summit, southern Africa's definitive conference and expo for information security, IT and business professionals. This year, over 70 expert speakers will deliver key insights across seven tracks, including workshops and training courses during the expanded five-day event. The ITWeb Security Summit will be staged at Vodacom World, Midrand, from 22-23 May 2018; and CTICC Cape Town on 29 May 2018. Focused and interactive workshops as well as in-depth training courses will be run in the days around the main conference and exhibition.
