Mobile newcomer 8ta announced yesterday that prepaid and hybrid subscribers can now buy airtime online via its Web site, using their credit cards.

The cellular arm of Telkom, 8ta has added the ability to purchase airtime and data bundles to its free self-service portal at www.8ta.com. Subscribers need to register on the Web site and complete the SMS verification process that follows.

According to Telkom Mobile managing executive Amith Maharaj, subscribers will be able to purchase airtime and data bundles via this portal, even if their airtime is depleted.

“Subscribers using the service will not be charged to review their airtime balance, redeem vouchers for airtime, convert airtime to data bundles, review data bundle balances and expiry dates, or top up airtime using their credit card.”

Maharaj says the portal is safe, as 8ta uses 3D Secure to protect subscribers when they disclose their credit card details online. “The 3D Secure system simply enables credit card holders to add a password over and above the usual credit card expiry and CVV three-digit numbers. The platform caters for locally issued Visa and Mastercard users.

“If your credit card is not already 3D-verified, the portal will securely verify the 3D Secure password online. The normal credit card process can then be completed, even with no airtime on the account, as the credit card application is zero rated.”

Last month, 8ta announced a collaboration with First National Bank, whereby prepaid customers could purchase airtime through the bank's electronic channels, including cellphone and online banking and ATMs.
