Deputy minister of human settlements Zou Kota-Fredericks and Vodacom's Alberts Breed hand over tablets to learners.

The Department of Human Settlements, in partnership with Vodacom, handed over smart devices to Dunoon Primary School in Cape Town.

This forms part of an initiative to improve and advance learning, as well as address skills development for learners in that area, says Vodacom.

As part of the handover, the school received tablets, an e-learning solution that offers free Internet access to education content, a tablet charging trolley, laptop, server and a configured router.

Alberts Breed, executive manager for Vodacom Western Cape, says the company believes access to education through digital tools is one of the key ways through which educational outcomes can be improved.

"Vodacom realises the importance of technology, especially mobile broadband and digital education services, in transforming the delivery of education, addressing current challenges and creating a platform for South Africa to leapfrog its education evolution process.

"This is a really poor community and it is going to add a lot of value to the kids and it just helps them to move to another level in terms of their education."

Human settlements deputy minister Zou Kota-Fredericks says she hopes the smart devices will add another dimension to the children's learning.

Kota-Fredericks adds: "It is exciting because you must remember our children now love computers. It is an investment because you must remember these are leaders of tomorrow and we are entering a fourth revolution which is an IT space."
