Samsung introduces its latest foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip.

South Africa will be among the first five countries across the globe to launch Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip.

This is according to Sung Yoon, Samsung Electronics Africa president and CEO, commenting on the limited edition launch of the company’s latest foldable smartphone.

The South Korean electronics manufacturer announced its Galaxy Z Flip will be on sale for one day on 22 February, in selected stores in Sandton City, Canal Walk and Gateway shopping centres.

It will be made available in additional locations from 1 March.

Samsung first entered the foldable smartphone market last year, with the launch of its luxury foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold. While there were setbacks with the launch of the Galaxy Fold, Yoon said when Samsung eventually launched the device in SA, it was well-received by the market.

“For the first month, we had 200 devices. Every time we promoted the Galaxy Fold in South Africa, it would sell out within hours.”

Following on the Galaxy Fold, Samsung believes the new device is shaping the foldable era for a new decade. “As the first device in the Z series, Galaxy Z Flip introduces a new device portfolio that reaffirms Samsung’s commitment to leading the category, and leveraging technologies and form factors to create foldable experiences that will surprise and delight in the years ahead.”

When opened, the smartphone features a 6.7-inch display. It folds into the size of a wallet or compact, making it easy to fit into a pocket or bag when closed.

The company says the device is designed with an innovative hideaway hinge and custom-built UX, therefore providing new ways to capture, share and experience content – all hands-free.

It also features an Infinity Flex Display with proprietary bendable ultra-thin glass, making it slimmer, with a sleek, premium look and feel.

Other features include receiving notifications whether the Galaxy Z Flip is closed, standing upright or open. When the device is closed, users will be able to check the date, time and battery status at a glance on the cover display.

“At Samsung, we were encouraged by the excitement for the Galaxy Fold. Galaxy Z Flip is an important next step as we look to build the foldable category by bringing to consumers a new form factor, new display and most importantly, a new kind of mobile experience,” said Justin Hume, director for integrated mobility at Samsung South Africa.

“With Galaxy Z Flip’s unique foldable design and user experience, we’re redefining what a mobile device can be, and what it enables consumers to do.”

Available in mirror purple and mirror black, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip comes with a luxury price tag of R29 999.
