Is the standards discussion a red herring?

Mimecast's chief scientist, Nathaniel Borenstein, asks whether the discussion of standards masks the real issues holding back cloud adoption.

The trouble with standards is that they sound like such a good idea. What could possibly be wrong with getting the world's finest minds together to figure out how to make a technology work in the best way for the most people?

In theory: nothing. In practice: mostly nothing. But some organisations use 'waiting for standards' as a reasonable excuse not to implement a technology at all.

A more important question to ask would be: “What specific standards are you waiting for?” If the company isn't able to be specific, then the argument is more of an excuse than a genuine concern.

Cloud computing is a technology that is dogged by numerous standards discussions. Some are valid and some are ludicrous.
