RC500 and RC900: Acer`s new stars in home entertainment

Johannesburg, 23 Mar 2004

The new AcerAspire RC900 and Acer Aspire RC500 series represent a new kind of multifunctional home system offering five different entertainment modes: Video, TV, Photo Album, Music and FM radio, combined in a powerful, complete PC package.

These modes can be easily selected either using the Super Dial, a convenient remote control, special multimedia keys on the keyboard or with the selection keys also located on top of the PC.

"In line with the `enjoyment centre` concept, simple commands allow the units to switch from a system for playing movies from optical disks or other digital media, to a television with a built-in video recorder, to an audio player for listening to music, to a radio," says John Geypen, product manager: desktops and servers at Acer.

All Acer Aspire RC900 and Acer Aspire RC500 models are equipped with the choice of Intel Pentium 4 processors with an Intel 865G chipset supporting FSB at 800MHz and Intel Hyper-Threading technology. The PC3200 DDR-SDRAM memory may be expanded up to 4GB and the ATA 100 hard disks have a minimum of 160GB. Optional graphics cards in AGP 8x slots are the latest generation to ensure maximum performance in both leisure as well as business applications.

The Acer Aspire RC900 and Acer Aspire RC500 have practical 7-in-1 memory card readers positioned on their fronts supporting the latest digital file formats, such as PRO, CompactFlash Type I, CompactFlash Type II, SmartMedia, Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard and xD-Picture Card. The front of the computer also has two USB 2.0 ports, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port and speaker and microphone jacks.

In addition to the usual PS/2, serial, parallel and VGA jacks, there are two additional USB 2.0 ports, a second IEEE 1394 FireWire port, the usual audio jacks, a special coaxial SPDIF audio output for connection of HiFi systems, TV, Ethernet and telephone line outputs.

The Acer Aspire RC900 and Acer Aspire RC500 can be quickly and easily connected to a LAN or the Internet with a built-in LAN card and modem. Peripherals, including headphones, microphones, digital cameras, scanners and digital video cameras are easily connected via the front accessible ports.

The Acer Aspire RC900 and Acer Aspire RC500 are enclosed in a silver and black minitower cabinet. The Acer Aspire RC900 is a tower housing designed for users who require maximum expansion capabilities, while the Acer Aspire RC500 is a slimline tower utilising less space. The mouse and keyboard are wireless to make the system ergonomic to use, either from the desk or from the comfort of a couch.

The Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system and software preload includes a complete series of system utilities to optimise configuration and additional software such as Norton Antivirus (updateable directly over the Internet), Adobe Acrobat Reader, PowerDVD for playing DVD-ROMs and NTI CD Maker.

The machines will be available in a variety of different configurations with 15- or 17-inch CRT or LCD Acer monitors.
