Chinese smartphone maker Huawei is thrilled by the sales of its flagship device, the P30 Pro, in the South African market.

On 3 April, Huawei officially launched its latest flagship smartphone series, the Huawei P30, at an event at Kyalami Race Track, a week after it was launched globally.

Along with the Huawei P30 series, Huawei also introduced a new tablet, notebook and two new smartwatches at the launch.

The P series is known for its innovations in photography and design.

Huawei launched the P30 about a month after its rival Samsung unveiled its flagship S10 device.

The Chinese company has announced the first-week sales figures for the Huawei P30 Pro, which it says indicate the device looks set to become Huawei's most popular smartphone in SA.

According to Huawei, after only five days, sales of the Huawei P30 Pro showed a 244% increase when compared to the number of Huawei P20 Pro devices sold during its launch week in mid-2018.

It notes that sales of the Huawei P30 show a 44% increase on the number of Huawei P20 smartphones sold during its first week of sales.

The Huawei P30 Pro is claimed to be the world's first smartphone with a Leica quad camera and features additional innovations in photography and videography.

The company says the Huawei P30 Pro currently sits on top of the DxOMark leader board with a total score of 112, making it the first device to break the 110 rating threshold.

Huawei also takes joint second place on the DxOMark leader board with its Huawei P20 Pro and Huawei Mate 20 Pro, along with Samsung's Galaxy S10 Plus.

Huawei's share of the South African smartphone market has grown considerably over the past two years.

According to market research company GfK, Huawei moved from the number three spot in 2017 to number two in 2018. Globally, Huawei's Net Promoter Score, which measures the willingness of customers to recommend a company's products, significantly improved in 2018 when the firm moved up to second place, replacing Samsung.

The Huawei P30 Pro retails at R18 999.
