The Department of Labour (DOL) this week announced U-filing, a new electronic system for the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF).

It says the UIF is leveraging technology to improve service delivery and is supporting efforts to create a paperless society through the introduction of U-filing.

Speaking at a DOL roadshow, in Limpopo this week, head of the DOL Albert Tshidavhu said U-filing introduces a system where paper will no longer be used to claim for UIF benefits.

"Technology is driving society towards a paperless administration system and the department is also assisting such efforts with the introduction of U-filing."

Pilot project

The department says U-filing is an electronic system that allows employers to register, pay and make their UIF declarations online.

"We want you to focus on your core business, which is to make profits and that is why we introduced the system to save you costs and the cumbersome administration process so that you can just click a button to comply with UIF processes," said Tshidavhu.

He added that the system is efficient, effective and will also save employers time. The DOL says the primary objective is to enhance service delivery to UIF beneficiaries.

During the roadshows, employers are also informed about the virtual office concept. "Virtual office relates to the enhancement of the U-filing system, which in future will allow UIF beneficiaries to make electronic applications for benefits."

The department explains that the concept is in a pilot phase and only accredited employers are allowed to use the system.
