Fujitsu Siemens Computers PRIMERGY Servers set the pace with new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors

Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors now in PRIMERGY servers, with an easy upgrade path for Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor-based PRIMERGY units

Johannesburg, 23 Apr 2008

Fujitsu Siemens Computers has announced that new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors are shipping in all AMD processor-based PRIMERGY server models.

Fujitsu Siemens Computers has introduced an easy upgrade path for customers who bought Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor-powered PRIMERGY servers since March 2007.

Designed to optimise performance when coupled with Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors, codenamed 'Barcelona', the PRIMERGY RX330 S1, BX630 S2 and Econel 230R server models with Quad-Core processors are immediately available.

Customers who have already purchased these PRIMERGY server models with Dual-Core processors can also take advantage of the increased performance and reduced power demands provided by the new Quad-Core processors. Upgrading is as simple as updating the system BIOS and replacing the processors.

"We designed PRIMERGY servers from the ground up to provide optimised performance and power economy when coupled with Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors," says Oliver Serek, Portfolio Manager - Dynamic Data Center at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "Now that the processors have arrived, we are introducing an easy upgrade path allowing customers who already have the server hardware to unlock extra performance and gain system efficiency by switching to the 'Barcelona' chips."

The new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors, which have an average compute power (ACP) of 75-watts, boast improved performance-per-watt over their Dual-Core predecessors, underlining their value proposition as an ideal platform for system consolidation and virtualisation. Later in the second quarter, AMD expects to introduce Highly Efficient (HE) versions of Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors which have an ACP of 55 Watts along with a 105-Watt ACP processor for customers who demand the highest raw performance.

Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor-powered PRIMERGY servers are also the ideal platform for customers who expect their servers to support anticipated growth in system demand in the years ahead, thanks to increased system headroom from four core processors.

"The commitment from Fujitsu-Siemens further demonstrates the strength of our long-standing relationship in delivering industry-leading server platforms to enterprise customers," said Gerhard Zehethofer, Sales Vice-President OEM EMEA, AMD. "Customers clearly see the benefit of AMD's unique native Quad-Core technology and Direct Connect Architecture in delivering long-term scalability, energy efficiency and sophisticated virtualisation into the data centre."

The RX330 S1 and BX630 S2 blade server are designed for use as standalone servers or as part of a server farm in a data centre, while the entry-level Econel 230R model boasts enough local capacity to be used as a standalone application server. The machines are also easy to control, since they ship with PRIMERGY ServerView Suite software, along with all other servers in the PRIMERGY family.
