The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has kicked-off public hearings to discuss the draft International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) roadmap.
The hearings, taking place today and tomorrow, follow ICASA's call for written submissions last year.
In a statement, ICASA says it received 20 written submissions in respect to this process, adding that it forms part of broader regulatory intervention in regards to broadband services.
The IMT roadmap, according to the authority, seeks to ensure universal availability of broadband services and a vibrant and competitive telecommunications industry, while promoting investment in the country.
Furthermore, it identifies the bands for IMT deployment and the migration of a number of current licensees out of, or within, bands identified for IMT services.
"For bands where costs and benefits of the migration were not straightforward, ICASA has conducted feasibility studies to determine the appropriateness of migration," says ICASA councillor Peter Zimri.
The public hearings are being held at ICASA's head office at Eco-Point Office Park in Centurion.
