On Mandela Day, Wednesday 18 July 2018, the team from EduPower Skills Academy, joined by the popular afternoon drive-time DJ, Mags, made a difference in the lives of the people who live at Ashley Village.
Run by the QuadPara Association of South Africa (QASA), Ashley Village in Pinetown is home to 16 people with disabilities, as well as the head office of QASA's KZN branch.
In the true spirit of Mandela Day, Mags, the EduPower team as well as groups from Derivco and Shave's Paint spent the day at the Village cleaning up, gardening, sanding and painting building interiors and exteriors. The team's energy remained high knowing that the fresh coat of paint and the colourful flowers that were planted in the garden will continue to brighten the environment and bring some cheer to the residents long after Mandela Day.
Commenting on her involvement, Mags says despite growing up in the Pinetown area, she never had any idea that the Village was there and was honoured to have been a part of the day. "I have been fortunate to join the crew at Ashley Village. It is heart-warming to be here and to have the opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of the people who live here," Mags explained.
The EduPower Skills Academy offers hosted 12-month SETA accredited learnerships made up of both classroom and experiential training, ensuring learners get real skills they can take into the work environment. As more than half of the academy's learners are people with disabilities, the company works closely with QASA to offer more unemployed people with disabilities practical training opportunities that will give them skills to build meaningful careers.
