The bottle: Reborn

Johannesburg, 15 Jan 2021

Say hello to the new Cypress EcoSmart collection from Targus. It’s one great step on our journey to creating products that are more thoughtful, more sustainable and altogether more socially conscious, from manufacturing to distribution. Good inside and out.

Made from recycled components, the new Cypress EcoSmart Collection is certified by the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) and aims to reduce the number of plastic bottles destined for landfills by utilising them in the bag production. The bottles are cleaned, flaked, re-polymerised and spun into fibre that is woven into the fabric that is used for the bags. The new collection includes over 30 sustainable carry cases, including backpacks, briefcases, sleeves and slipcases.

The Cypress range is Targus’ third collection for its EcoSmart line. Previous collections included the Balance EcoSmart and the Spruce EcoSmart, which is Targus’ top performing backpack to date. The Cypress EcoSmart Collection improves on previous designs in several ways. By incorporating more recycled materials into the bags, we have increased the positive impact of the range, but we’ve also committed to tracking those materials through the GRS (Global Recycle Standard) programme.

“Sustainability is complicated. There are a lot of companies making claims – but they can’t back it up. For us, it’s really important that we do it in the right way,” says Joanne Sessler, Vice-President of Global Design and innovation, Targus. “By being GRS Certified*, we are able to trace the yarn fibre back to the recycling system it came from, even down to the individual people who were making the yarn. So we know the entire process of the material’s production and know that it is being made as sustainably as possible.”

Targus merges form and function across all the new Cypress EcoSmart bags. The collection marries a sleek and sophisticated style while providing high-performance protective padding to ensure the laptop is protected. To give customers a great experience, backpacks and briefcases include padded and ergonomic shoulder straps, water bottle holders and trolley straps for attaching to rolling luggage.

There is no such thing as "away". When we throw anything away it must go somewhere.

* GRS is a global full product standard which tracks and traces the full life of recycled material from pre-consumer to post-consumer. GRS tracks social, environmental and chemical requirements. The objectives of GRS are to define requirements to ensure accurate content claims and good working conditions, as well as to ensure that harmful environmental and chemical impacts are minimised.
