Goods-based remittance app expands to Malawi
Malawian expats living in South Africa can now shop and send essential goods and groceries to families back home using the Malaicha.com app.
Introduced by local remittances operator Hello Paisa last August, the data-free app is available for download from the Google Play Store and App Store.
It enables customers to place an order for goods, settle the payment via an EFT or at selected retailers, and have the products ready for delivery at collection points in Malawi on the same day.
In a statement, Hello Paisa says expanding its goods-based remittance network to Malawi aims to address the food shortages due to weather-related hazards, and the socio-economic effects of the coronavirus.
According to Sayjil Magan, MD of Hello Paisa, the company has established 10 depots in Malawi to deliver essential groceries and products to those in desperate need.
“More than half of the Malawian population live below the poverty line, and widespread food insecurity has only been exacerbated by the coronavirus,” says Magan. “As Africans, it is our responsibility to provide simple, tech-driven solutions to the critical food shortages experienced by our neighbours Malawi and Zimbabwe.
“Depots have been established in Blantyre, Limbe, Dedza, Lilongwe, Mangochi, Mzimba, Mzuzu, Nkhata Bay, Nkhotakota and Rumhi, where residents can receive goods sent from family across the globe via the Malaicha.com app.”
Magan adds that the extension of the service offering also aligns with World Food Day as a token of its commitment to support the underserved by making goods affordable and easily accessible.
“It is our social responsibility to aid our neighbours in times of crisis, and our key consideration as a company is to make these solutions as quick, convenient and cost-effective as possible. Survival necessities must be accessible to everyone, and it is our humanitarian mandate to deliver sustenance where it is needed most,” he concludes.
