New smartphone bar code computer

Johannesburg, 19 Oct 2010

Opticon, one of the originators of the bar code 30 years ago, launches the multifunctional rugged H21 Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone.

The H21 includes a bar code scanner, colour camera, GPS, 3G/HSDPA modem, BT and WiFi, 2.8-inch touch screen, keypad and much more.

“We are very excited about the H21. This product will provide our clients a very competitive rugged solution. We expect a full take-on from clients in the logistics, asset management, field and sales services and allied industries where mobility is the name of the game. Many mobile workers today carry several mobile devices - the H21 ends that. Traditional rugged PDAs are bulky and heavy and not suited as a mobile phone. The H21 bridges that gap with an all-in-one device at an industry beating price,” says Stef du Plessis of Osiris Technical Systems, the Africa distributor for Opticon.

The ruggedness of the H21 and long battery life makes it especially suitable for the harsh day-to-day demands in the field. It can withstand a drop of 1.5m and is IP64 certified, putting an end to water damage. Du Plessis added: “Clear advantages in terms of price, the rugged nature and a standard two-year warrantee, plus local support, makes selection of the H21 the obvious choice in this market segment.”

Standard smartphone features include Windows Mobile 6.5, Bluetooth and WiFi. Four versions of the H21 are available with options of 1D/2D bar code scanner and numeric as well as qwerty keyboards. The 2.8-inch high resolution touch screen (640x480) is suitable to accept POD signatures and even the most demanding mobile applications. Extended data storage is possible via microSD and HC cards up to 4GB.

This lightweight (235 gram) ergonomically shaped device comes with 3G/HSDPA and assisted GPS. The 3.2megapixel colour camera with auto focus and flashlight takes care of geo-tagged image documentation needs for various industries.

Additional accessories such as car kits and docking stations are available, with more to come.

The extended benefits of the H21 are obvious for the following sectors:

Logistics and courier services
Field service
Field sales and merchandising
Facility and security, and many others.
