Following Gelmato's acquisition of identity management business, 3M Cogent, the identity solutions firm has unveiled a new biometric identification solution.

Gemalto formally completed the acquisition of 3M Cogent, which specialises in in biometrics for law enforcement, civil identity and border control, in May 2017. The introduction of the solution marks the first major product innovation since the change in ownership.

According to the company, CABIS 7 is designed to enable law enforcement and other government agencies to perform biometric-based identity searches. Markets and Markets says many governments have set some stringent rules and regulations in the travel and immigration sector to improve the overall security - making it essential to use biometrics visas. This factor would drive the growth of biometric system market in the travel and immigration sector.

Notable enhancements incorporated in the identification tool include true multi-modal capability integrating fingerprint, palm print, face, iris and latent images, adds Gelmato.

As a result, operators can utilise an even wider range of biometric input data and database records in pursuit of reliable identification and verification matches. Furthermore, fundamental architecture and platform enhancements enable a 30% reduction in set-up time as compared to previous versions, and future proof a customer's investment. CABIS 7 also features a completely re-designed user interface, improving usability.

"Gemalto's fresh investment in R&D is building on Cogent's proven ability to deliver outstanding biometric identification solutions," says Daniel Asraf, senior vice president of biometrics solutions for Gemalto.

"Cogent's AFIS [automated fingerprint identification system] core technology is already hard at work in around 200 applications across 80 countries, and the addition of resources such as multi-modal capability and cloud-based deployment will further enhance its value in the fight to protect borders and communities from a wide range of threats."

According to Market Research, the global biometric authentication and identification market is one of the fastest growing industries, owing to the changing dynamics of the legal and regulatory framework, as well as the intense competitive rivalry among surplus of public companies.

For a long time, the biometric authentication market has been dominated by the fingerprint modality as it is easy to use and has a low implementation cost, it says. However, the trends are now inclined towards next generation biometrics that includes touch-less biometrics such as facial, iris, retina and voice, DNA biometrics, as well as multimodal biometrics, adds Market Research.
