Apple has expanded the range of fourth-generation iPad models, with the introduction of a new 128GB model.

Apple has quietly announced a new 128GB version of the fourth-generation iPad with Retina display. The 128GB iPad will be available in both WiFi and WiFi and cellular models.

Apple's senior VP of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, says: "With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300 000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs."

According to Apple, 120 million iPads have been sold to date, and Schiller says: "It's clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and every day they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs."

Apple shocked consumers with the surprise reveal of the fourth-generation iPad late last year (only a matter of months after the release of the third-generation iPad) at the same launch event as the iPad Mini.

The fourth-generation iPad features a 9.7-inch Retina display, an Apple A6X chip (which boasts twice the processing power of its predecessor), FaceTime HD camera, iOS 6.1 and LTE capability.

The 128GB iPad will go on sale in the US on 5 February at a suggested retail price of $799 for the WiFi only version, and $929 for the WiFi and cellular model. With a relatively steep price tag, Apple seems to be targeting the high-end iPad at enterprise, education and artists.

Apple says "virtually all" of the Fortune 500 and over 85% of the Global 500 are deploying or testing the iPad.

"Companies regularly utilising large amounts of data such as 3D CAD files, X-rays, film edits, music tracks, project blueprints, training videos and service manuals all benefit from having a greater choice of storage options for iPad," says Apple.
