E-learning has the potential to address the skills shortage currently being experienced in many sectors across South Africa, says Teryl Schroenn, CEO of Accsys.

The national provider of HR and payroll management solutions since 1980 introduced Africa's first online payroll qualification through its e-learning portal.

The e-learning portal allows learners to gain an NQF (National Qualifications Framework) level five Diploma in Payroll Administration, giving them a solid and practical foundation on which to base a career in the payroll environment, Accsys says.

Nedbank Group HR senior manager Helen Tuininga says her company has benefited as a direct result of Accsys's online training programme: “From a business perspective, I have seen the confidence levels of individuals grow in leaps and bounds. I have also seen a remarkable improvement in some performance management issues - the bar gets raised every year, with some staff moving from victim to victor.”

Lindley-Anne Valentine, an e-learning student from Nedbank E-Shared Services, says the Payroll Learnership grounded her career in payroll because it gave her the opportunity to add more skill and value to her job. She is currently filling the position of team manager.

Studying online and in groups, says Valentine, was challenging, but was made easier through the support she received from her mentors at Accsys and Nedbank, as they were always only a call away.

Schroenn adds that there is a great deal of interest from learners in obtaining an accredited, recognised qualification via the Internet and virtual classrooms.
