Cell C has announced a partnership with global mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Lycamobile, to start rolling out its services in South Africa.

The deal expands Lycamobile's network reach to 23 countries worldwide and marks the firm's first launch in Sub-Saharan Africa.

"We are very excited to be partnering with Cell C to launch our offering to this compelling market. As one of the most influential and technologically advanced countries in the region, South Africa is a natural choice for Lycamobile, as we continue to expand further into the thriving African telecommunications space," says Lyca group chairman Allirajah Subaskaran.

Cell C CEO Jose Dos Santos hinted at the deal with the UK-based MVNO in March when presenting the company's financial results for the year ending 31 December.

South Africa's third biggest mobile operator has already opened its network to MVNO partners, including me&you mobile, Virgin Mobile, Mr Price Mobile and FNB Connect.

Founded in 2006, Lycamobile now serves 15 million customers globally across five continents and claims to be the world's largest MVNO. Following the recent launch in Ukraine, this latest development supports its growth strategy of launching in new territories, including Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia.

Lycamobile operates in: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Macedonia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, UK, Ukraine, US and now South Africa.
