USAASA presents the USAASA and USAF 2016/2017 annual reports to parliament

Johannesburg, 05 Oct 2017

On 3 October 2017, the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa (USAASA) through the Chairperson, Mawethu Cawe and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Lumko Mtimde presented to the Parliamentary Committee on Telecommunications and Postal Services, the USAASA and Universal Service and Access Fund (USAF) 2016 / 2017 Annual Reports.

USAASA and USAF, both received an unqualified audit opinion reports from the Auditor General of South Africa for the year under review.

The agency has had many challenges in the year under review with its project delays, management changes and other matters. The appointments of the CEO, Mtimde and Chief Financial Officer, Mahomed Chowan brought about stability and compliance culture.

This resulted in the successful implementation of USAASA's broadband rollout project for free WiFi in the OR Tambo District Municipality in the Eastern Cape, which was launched by the Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa on the 7 July 2017.

"USAASA's performance report indicates improvements from the previous financial year, and USAF performance report indicates an unSMART Annual Performance Plan. This has led to regression in respect of performance, consequence management has been noted as USAASA actions against those involved in noncompliance challenges," says Mtimde.

Cawe says: "We look forward to seeing the results of the implemented solutions put in place to enhance the performance of the agency based on the steps taken by the board and management of USAASA to improve internal processes which will ensure better service delivery."

USAASA has implemented the long-awaited ERP solution, which is going to assist the agency to automate its business process systems to ensure efficiencies in its daily operations. The agency continues to ensure the delivery of ICT's for all in the remote and rural South Africa as per its mandate.
