With the growing accessibly of next generation technology and a vast, untapped human potential, Africa has the chance to make a technological leap forward. But major obstacles face the continent, including the structural requirements necessary to develop the digital ecosystem, along with the importance of building a skills base, according to AfricaCom organisers Informa.

This is one of the key topics that will be up for discussion at the 2019 AfricaCom editions, held from 12 to 14 November in Cape Town.

The connectivity track and exhibition hall will explore and showcase what is required for the telcos to become fully digital and enable a thriving digital economy on the continent.

Assisting in this evolution will be an entire plethora of emerging technologies.  What can be done to overcome barriers to adoption and scale these new technologies to solve society’s challenges in Africa will be unpacked in a panel discussion on Wednesday, 13 November.

The moderator for this session is Terryanne Chebet, GM of Metropol TV,  who will be joined by Paula Ingabire, Rwanda’s minister of ICT & Innovation, Isabel dos Santos, chair of UNITEL, Carole Wamuyu Wainaina, COO of Africa50, Juliet Ehimuan, country director of Google Nigeria, and Charlene Verzmoter, head of philanthropy at Microsoft.

Enterprise Digital Transformation will be a key theme at this year’s AfricaTech Centre Stage, a new show feature.

Sessions to look out for include:

  • Technology is fundamentally reshaping the way we do business. What should enterprise leaders expect in the years to come and how should they respond?
  • How is artificial intelligence (AI) transforming African businesses and how can it be used to elevate African economies?
  • Improving mining safety and retaining competitive advantage: utilising IoT to power Africa's largest industry
  • Cyber security and data privacy

The Women in Tech track will also turn over key issues for women in the industry, ranging from the need for diversity in AI, to the challenges women face in breaking into the industry, staying in it or returning to it.

Other highlights to factor in are:

  • IoT World Africa
  • AI Summit Cape Town
  • FinTech Africa
  • Leaders In Summit
