Sony has officially unveiled the Xperia Tablet Z, which is set to hit SA at the beginning of July this year.

The launch event, hosted at the Sony Vodaworld store in Midrand, showcased the device's water-, dust- and shatter-resistant capabilities.

"In the past few months, we've been excited at the mobile presence of the Xperia Z in the market and with the Tablet Z, we want to continue with that legacy and raise the bar higher," said Mark Fenzel, sales director, Middle East and Africa, Sony, speaking at the event.

"The Xperia Tablet Z will be in SA at the beginning of July this year and will be the slimmest, lightest and fastest tablet in the market that is water, dust and shatter resistant," he continued.

Andrew Fraser, Sony's channel marketing manager, detailed the device's features, including a 1.5GHz QualComm Snapdragon s4 processor, S-Force Front Surround 3D sound, a 2MP HD front camera, and an 8MP rear camera featuring Exmor R for mobile, which allows for good picture quality even for images taken in poorly-lit conditions.

"We're continuing with Sony's 60-year legacy of what we call precision craftsmanship with the 10-inch device. The device will come LTE-ready and we believe with its slim 7.7mm design weighing at 500g, the device should set itself apart in the tablet market," Fraser continued.

According to Fraser, the device features one-touch connectivity that allows multibrand remote control, which allows the consumer to view all features of the device on TV.

"We've put thought into improving the Xperia Z with this device, as we wanted a product that went the extra mile, including the multibrand remote control that allows access to not just the Sony brand of TVs and remotes," he said.

Features:

* 10.1" HD 1920x1200p WUXGA Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2
* LTE, 3G and WiFi connectivity
* Thin design at 6.9 mm and lightweight at 495g
* Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with 1.5GHz asynchronous quad CPUs and 2GB RAM
* One-touch connectivity with Near Field Communication (NFC)
* 8 MP rear camera featuring Exmor R for mobile and Superior Auto plus 2MP HD front camera
* 16GB internal memory plus optional Micro SD card (Up to 32GB).
* Battery STAMINA mode further improves the standby time.

He also mentioned that Sony would be releasing other devices that will support the main tablet features: "We'll be unveiling other products that enhance the features of the tablet, such as the docking station, which does not require any wires and will automatically charge the device when slotted," he added.

The anticipated retail price of the device will be less than R10 000, said Fraser.

"We don't have official prices just yet. However, we can anticipate that it will be less than R10 000. Of course, this will also be at the discretion of the different mobile operators, as we anticipate that it will be sold on different price plans," he concluded.
