1974 - A book by Richard L Nolan, Managing the Data Resource Function, may be the earliest known systematic English-language treatment of the topic of large-scale IT management.

1980s - IBM documents the original Systems Management concepts in a four-volume series called A Management System for Information Systems. These widely accepted 'yellow books' are key inputs to the original set of ITIL books. What is today called ITIL version one is developed under the auspices of the UK government agency Central Computer and Telecommunication Agency (CCTA), entitled "Government Information Technology Infrastructure Management Methodology" (GITMM).

1984 - Carnegie Mellon University establishes the Software Engineering Institute (SEI).

1985 - The SEI publishes the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) key practices for software.

1985 - IBM's books are compiled into a book named Management System for the Information Business.

1987 - The Project Management Institute (PMI) releases the Project Management Body Of Knowledge (PMBOK), first edition.

1988 - The CCTA develops and publishes the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) v1.0.

1989 - The CCTA develops and publishes the Projects in Controlled Environments (PRINCE) methodology.

1989 - Managing the Software Process is published by IBM.

1991 - The IT Service Management Forum (itSMF) is formed in the UK.

1991 - Software Capability Maturity Model (SW-CMM) v1.0 is released.

1992 - The Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT), a set of best practices for IT management, is created by the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA), and the IT Governance Institute (ITGI).

1993 - SW-CMM v1.1 is released.

1994 - ITIL becomes the de facto standard for service management practices.

1994 - Microsoft introduces Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF) v1.0.

1995 - The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) publishes the first draft of ISO 15504 Software Process Improvement and Capability dEtermination (SPICE).

1996 - ISACA and the ITGI publish COBIT v1.0.

1996 - The PMI releases PMBOK, second edition.

1996 - The UK Government's Office of Government Commerce (OGC) publishes the first edition of PRINCE2.

1997 - SW-CMM revisions are halted in support for CMMI.

1998 - ISACA and ITGI publish COBIT v2.0, with the implementation toolset and high level and detailed control objectives added.

1998 - ISO 15504 SPICE is completed and published.

1998 - The OGC releases PRINCE2, second edition.

1999 - Microsoft releases Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF) v1.0.

1999 - The OGC releases ITIL v2.0.

1999 - The British Standards Institute publishes BS 7799, the British Standard for Information Security.

2000 - The world's first ITIL aligned standard is published: BS15000.

2000 - CMMI v1.02 is released.

2000 - The PMI releases PMBOK, third edition.

2000 - ISO publishes ISO 17799, the International Standard for Information Security.

2000 - The SEI upgrades CMM to the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI).

2000 - ISACA and ITGI release COBIT v3.0, which includes management guidelines.
2001 - The CCTA merges into the OGC.

2002 - Microsoft releases MSF v3.0. Microsoft uses ITIL as the basis to develop the proprietary Microsoft Operations Framework (MOF).

2002 - CMMI v1.1 is released.

2002 - The OGC revises and publishes PRINCE2, 2002.

2002 - The Sarbanes-Oxley Act becomes law in the US, having a significant impact on the uptake of COBIT in the US.

2003 - Microsoft releases MOF v3.0.

2003 - The online edition of COBIT becomes available.

2005 - The SEI releases IT Service CMM RC1.

2005 - The OGC releases PRINCE2, fourth edition.

2005 - The fourth edition of COBIT is released.

2005 - Consultation for a new release of ITIL itself is undertaken. BS15000 is placed under 'fast track' to become an ISO standard: ISO 20000.

2006 - The OGC and itSMF work together to scope the content of an update to ITIL publications.

2006 - CMMI v1.2 is released.
