Check voter registration online, at ATMs

As from today voters with any bank card can go to any Absa ATM to confirm whether they have been registered to vote for the coming municipal elections.

The agreement between the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and Absa enables users to check whether they are registered by inserting their bank cards into any Absa ATM.

The user can do so by selecting the transaction, which is listed under the "more transactions" field within the transaction selection menu and opt to check their registration status, by putting in their identity number and following the instructions.

Libisi Maphanga, CIO at the IEC, says the system is ready for use by anyone who would like to check if they are registered.

"We are trying to get as many people as we can to register for the municipal elections," says Maphanga.

In addition to Absa`s ATMs, registered voters can also check their details on the IEC Web site, send an SMS with their identity number to 32810, or call the IEC call centre on the toll-free number 0800 11 8000.

Maphanga adds: "The IEC`s information on registered voters is sourced from a single database and I can assure users they will access the correct details when utilising the ATM."

The IEC says voters who are not registered or who have changed address since registering have a last opportunity to register at their local voting station on 19 and 20 November.
