Rwanda calls for ICT skills
Senator Wellars Gasamagera, a member of the Rwanda ICT steering committee in Parliament, indicates that for the IT sector to prosper, Rwanda needs an improvement in ICT skills, reports All Africa.com
During a meeting in Kampala, Uganda, stakeholders from the region discussed emerging issues on Internet usage including broadband accessibility, cyber security, Internet domain name management, as well as regional ICT human capacity development.
Gasamagera called for the need to improve education levels in ICT to ensure that the country has well trained personnel to fill critical skills vacuum especially within this sector.
SME ICT spend to exceed $95bn
IT research firm AMI-Partners' World Wide Cloud Services study finds small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are rapidly adopting cloud services as a strategy to reduce costs and boost agility, states Channel Insider.
The study confirms customer relationship management (CRM), payroll, accounting and financials and Web conferencing tend to be the leading applications currently used in the cloud.
Total cloud-related ICT spending among SMEs worldwide exceeded $52 billion in 2009, representing about 6% of total worldwide SME ICT spend. By 2014 it's expected this figure will exceed $95 billion.
Nigeria voices e-waste concerns
The dumping of e-waste into the Nigerian market and the rest of the African sub-region has continued to grow attracting both national and international regulatory authorities, says Vanguard.
The director general of the Nigerian National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency says the agency will soon come up with tough regulations to ensure governance and compliance around e-waste management.
The growth in ICT in Nigeria combined with rapid product obsolescence as resulted in e-waste being recognised as the fastest growing waste stream in the region.
