Kekana quits Telkom

Johannesburg, 10 Jun 2005

Telkom has confirmed that Nkenke Kekana, group executive for regulatory affairs and public policy, has resigned his position at the fixed-line operator.

Telkom media relations specialist, Xolisa Vapi, says Kekana will leave the company at the end of June to "pursue other career opportunities". However, it is not clear at present what these opportunities are.

Although Kekana was not available for comment, he was quoted in the Telkom announcement as saying: "I have a learnt a lot in the two years that I spent at Telkom, and - together with the team - feel I made a contribution in positioning the company for competition."

Prior to joining Telkom, Kekana served as chairman of Parliament`s communications portfolio committee, having been a member of Parliament from the outset in 1994. He participated in the formulation of much of the major telecommunications and broadcasting legislation.

In his capacity as chairman of the communications portfolio committee he also hosted many public hearings on communications issues, such as the role of telecommunications in Africa, the quality of cellular services in SA and the transformation of the advertising industry.

According to Telkom`s outgoing CEO, Sizwe Nxasana, Kekana played a key role in the changing regulatory environment and the liberalisation of the ICT sector, and was praised for his efforts in building and facilitating relations between Telkom and its stakeholders, including government.
