IBM ups women`s tech participation

Johannesburg, 08 Aug 2006

The South African leg of the IBM Women in Technology and Leadership Programme has begun.

"The IT industry across SA suffers from a lack of female talent and IBM hopes to foster enthusiasm for technology among girls," says Debbie van Zyl, IBM SA`s skills executive.

Twenty women studying in technical fields at university have been selected to participate, she says.

IBM says it will show participants the possibilities of the various roles within the company and guide them in leadership principles.

Sentech has also taken the opportunity presented by Women`s Day to encourage the development of women in the ICT sector.

"Sentech firmly believes human capital development, inclusive of gender equality and the empowerment of women, is fundamental to achieving our vision as a leader in world-class broadband communications," says CEO Sebiletso Mokone-Matabane.

Mokone-Matabane says while SA marks 9 August as a single day to honour women, every day is women`s day if society acknowledges the contribution they have made in various fields.

The organisation runs the Khulisa programme, which fosters technology-related skills development in young women.
