Exponant has been appointed to host, service and support Comair`s kulula.com e-commerce Web site in a three-year contract.

Kulula.com, a low-cost, no frills airline established in August 2001, claims to have attracted the highest volume of e-commerce turnover in the country.

It processes more than 85 000 transactions a month worth more than R25 million, with four million hits per month.

Steve Duley, manager for IT at Comair, says because Exponant is a second- or third-tier ISP, Comair effectively has all three of the major ISPs - M-Web, Internet Solutions and UUNet -available at its host, "assuring us of better uptime".

He says Comair had just purchased new airline reservation software and decided to look at a new hosting system at the same time.

Exponant CIO Johann Swart, explaining the ISP model, says the company buys bandwidth from first-tier ISPs and partitions it according to each customer`s requirements. It bundles the bandwidth into a guaranteed service solution, including hosting, development, support, maintenance, and management. Exponant has built a data centre and payment gateway to service its offshore business unit primarily, from which it supplies these services.

The cutover process from kulula`s previous service provider to Exponant took three weeks and Exponant now supports, guarantees and maintains everything from the backbone up to the operating system level for kulula.com.
