Chinese technology giant Huawei’s new Mate 30 Series, which will be launched on 16 September in Munich, will be embedded with the latest Kirin chipset.
This is according to Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, as he unveiled the Kirin 990 and its 5G version, Kirin 990 5G, during his keynote address at the IFA consumer tech trade show, in Berlin, Germany, last Friday.
The launch of the system on a chip (SOC) comes as the Chinese telecoms giant has been caught up in the crossfire between the US and China, which resulted in Huawei being blacklisted.
The US, which put Huawei on an export blacklist citing national security issues, has been rallying its allies to cut Huawei out of planned 5G networks, citing “national security threats” due to the company’s close ties to the Chinese government.
The blacklist has seen companies, including Alphabet’s Google and British chip designer ARM, limit or cease their relationships with the Chinese company.
Although he was delivering the most anticipated keynote, Yu did not address the company’s challenges, but instead announced the chipsets and Huawei’s latest products.
According to Huawei, Kirin 990 is designed to bring elevated performance, energy efficiency, artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and photography to smartphone users.
In terms of CPU, Kirin 990 features a three-level power efficiency structure, comprising two ultra-large cores, two large cores and four small cores, with a dominant frequency up to 2.86GHz. Further, it uses a 16-core Mali-G76 GPU and the new system-level Smart Cache for intelligent flow distribution, which can effectively save bandwidth and lower power consumption.
Huawei said Kirin 990’s 5G version supports the industry’s most compact 5G smartphone solution. With the 7nm+ EUV manufacturing process, Kirin 990 5G is integrated with a 5G modem, achieving a smaller area and lower power consumption.
“Kirin 990 (5G) is the world’s first 5G SOC, and it will enable end-users to access a superb 5G connectivity experience, one step ahead in the first year of 5G commercialisation,” Yu stated. “To meet users’ requirements for enhanced 5G experiences in the 5G era, Kirin 990 5G has been fully upgraded in terms of performance and power efficiency, AI computing and ISP, extending mobile phone experiences to a new level.”
At the same event, Yu showcased Huawei’s upgraded P30 Pro smartphone, which will be available in Mystic Blue and Misty Lavender.
The company previously lauded sales of its flagship device, the P30 Pro, in the South African market. Yu reiterated the P30 Series smartphones have become Huawei’s most popular flagship smartphones.
He noted the company has already sold over 16 million P30 Series devices globally, achieving 53% growth.
Yu also unveiled flagship wireless earphones, the Huawei FreeBuds 3. The FreeBuds 3 are available in black and white.
“As the first wireless earphones running on Huawei’s self-developed and powerful Kirin A1 chip, Huawei FreeBuds 3 provide stable and fast connectivity, impressive sound quality and a smart noise cancelling experience.”
