Job Title: Deputy CIO and Chief Technology Officer.
Company Name: Auditor General South Africa.
Your role within the ISACA SA Chapter: Secretary, Audit and Risk Committee and Education and Research committees member.

1. What inspired you to become a member of the South Africa Chapter Board?

The willingness to serve and give back to ISACA and the IT community that contributed to the professional I am today. I would like to see ISACA SA Chapter grow bigger than it is now, not just in numbers but mainly in the impact it makes in the lives of aspiring and experienced information system audit, assurance, security, risk and IT governance professionals.

2. How has being on the board benefited you professionally? Please be as specific as possible.

Just being appointed to the ISACA board is big enough for me as I did not expect it, particularly in the role of Secretary which has a huge responsibility in ensuring that ISACA SA Chapter is governed well and maintains its reputation.

On a personal level I have grown so much in the short period of being on the board through exposure to different thinking among the board members, access to top class leadership resources and insights from ISACA international and making new friends. Top of all is that I have extended my professional network by at least 16 other professionals and fellow board members who I can tap into for ideas, insights, etc. We have become a very close family with one objective; to take ISACA SA Chapter to new heights.

Lastly, although it's a demanding volunteer job, I am having fun doing it and becoming a better person overall.

3. Describe your day-to-day duties as an ISACA South Africa Chapter Board member.

The daily duties of the Secretary are anchored in the portfolio vision and strategic plan which must align with and support the Chapter and ISACA international strategies.

The main responsibilities are being a parliamentarian, which means keeping order during meetings, responding to incoming queries and enquiries from our membership and other stakeholders.

At a governance level my focus is on ensuring that the Chapter bylaws, policies and procedures are reviewed and updated annually where necessary. I also ensure that the Chapter is compliant with laws and regulations of the country, its own bylaws, policies and procedures.

I am responsible for defining and implementing a risk management framework and strategy for the Chapter and implementing with the assistance of the board. I also sit on the audit committee with other board members and contribute to making sure that the financial affairs of the chapter are run in a proper manner.

Last, but not least, is progress towards achieving all the above has to be formally documented and presented to the board on a monthly basis. At the end of the year I make sure that all Chapter reports and balanced scored card are completed and ready for submission to ISACA international.

4. What strategic goals are you pursuing within your portfolio?

As explained above, I am responsible for the Chapter's governance, risk and compliance portfolio. Professionalising and corporatising the Chapter is a journey which is aimed at increasing the Chapter brand and reputation.

5. How do you spend your free time away from work and from your role on the ISACA SA board? What do you do for fun?

I have a family and when I do find time away I support my two sons, the older one is a gym fanatic/body builder and younger one an upcoming soccer star who is currently in the Wits University development academy, after spending a few years with Supersport United academy. So for now weekends are spent travelling with him to various soccer matches. Hopefully it pays off in the future.

Besides that I love reading, going for walk to get the blood flowing and sitting back to watch sport on TV while enjoying my drink. I am a Kaizer Chiefs as well as Manchester United and Barcelona fan.

6. What advice would you give to those thinking about volunteering their services to the ISACA SA Chapter?

It's not about coffee and biscuits. It's a demanding schedule and work that builds you as a leader. You have to have passion to do it and be willing to sacrifice a few things for the benefit of the profession.
