Legal practitioners and employees working in SA’s labour courts across the country will now be able to connect to high-speed, free WiFi.

Digital library and online information services provider Sabinet has rolled out free WiFi in all of SA’s labour courts.

The labour court of SA has its seat in Johannesburg and branches in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban.

The free WiFi facilitates easy access to a range of legal resources online, such as up-to-date, reported and unreported labour judgements, Bargaining Council Agreements, labour legislation, Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration awards and labour-related Acts.

Established over 35 years ago, Sabinet provides digital products and services to cross-sector organisations, including library management systems, resource-sharing tools, digital data collection management and content management systems.

When the WiFi project launched six years ago, over 7 000 logins were reported, according to Sabinet.

Its purpose was to facilitate access to a reliable, fast Internet connection to address the need for on-site online research and resources that aid members of the law fraternity in performing their tasks.

“In this digital age, it is imperative that legal practitioners have reliable access to online legislation and resources in order to carry out their tasks efficiently,” says a Sabinet spokesperson.

“Many of the lawyers at the labour courts also make use of the service to provide valuable assistance to their pro bono clients. Sabinet’s WiFi service is available in most sections of the labour courts, including the judges' chambers, court rooms, library and pro bono office in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.”

Sabinet has been offering this service through South African WiFi communications specialist, GConnect, which is registered under holding company Exmile Technologies. The companies have more than 52 years of combined WiFi services experience.
