TV networks optimise

Television networks are using network optimisation technology from Cisco and Blue Coat to ensure delivery of their coverage of the 2008 Summer Olympics in China, reports Networking News.

Even as IT departments grapple with the strain that online Olympic video puts on their networks, Cisco and Blue Coat are helping NBC and China's CCTV offer up the high-definition content viewed by billions globally.

Cisco installed appliances with its wide area application services (WAAS) software at NBC's three primary production and editing centres for the 2008 Olympics Beijing, New York City, and NBC's studios in Connecticut.

Networks enable virtualisation

As enterprises virtualise their environments and move towards the next-generation data centre, the network will enable this move, says Internetnews.com.

The network will have increased bandwidth and capabilities to meet the needs of virtualisation, said Rajiv Ramaswami, VP and GM of Cisco, at The Next Generation Data Centre and LinuxWorld conferences.

He predicted that Ethernet will win out over other networking technologies, and enterprises will consolidate their networks to meet their evolving data centre requirements.

China expands wireless projects

China is set to expand wireless Internet coverage in its major cities, with a unified network proposed for one of the country's most prosperous regions, says Network World.

Guangdong province is looking to build a network that would cover the cities of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan and Dongguan.

The project would cover 358 square miles and cost about 1 billion yuan ($145.6 million), giving no timetable as to when it might be completed.
