Samsung MD moves to Telkom

Johannesburg, 17 Jul 2012

Deon Liebenberg, formerly MD of Samsung Electronics in SA, has taken a top position at Telkom Business Mobile.

Liebenberg, referred to by Telkom as an “industry veteran”, joined the company as head of Telkom Business Mobile yesterday. This follows his year-long tenure with Samsung and his preceding four-year career at Research In Motion (RIM), where he served as regional director for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Liebenberg says he decided the time had come to move on, “having spent the last year supporting Samsung's substantial brand growth in the local market”. He says Samsung Electronics SA has a “very strong and capable team”, together with which he feels he achieved the brand milestones he was originally tasked with.

George Ferreira, COO and VP at Samsung Electronics Africa, says the company is grateful for Liebenberg's contribution to the brand. “[We] are certain that the solid foundation created over the last 12 months will continue to garner positive growth and momentum for the brand locally.”

Having started a sales career at Telkom 18 years ago as corporate account manager for the company, Liebenberg has worked within the ICT sales arena and sector at large ever since. Subsequent to Telkom, he headed the sales division at Vodacom and has also fulfilled the role of country sales director at Motorola and RIM.

Liebenberg holds a Bachelor's degree in economics, from the University of the Free State, an Honours degree in Business Administration and an MBA, from the University of Stellenbosch. Telkom says given his education and employment record, Liebenberg is equipped to lead the company's business mobile sales team.

In his new role, says Telkom, Liebenberg will be responsible for driving strategy and execution for all mobile activities in Telkom Business. “He will play a vital role in positioning Telkom as the leading provider of converged communication solutions in SA.”

Launched in September last year, Telkom Business Mobile services constitute a relatively new division of the fixed-line telco's operations. Telkom has been moving increasingly towards achieving fixed-mobile convergence, and unveiled its first converged bundled solutions for business customers last month.

Brian Armstrong, MD of Telkom Business, says there is no doubt in his mind that Liebenberg's “vast knowledge and experience” will greatly benefit Telkom and Telkom Business. “We welcome Deon to Telkom and wish him all the best in managing his new challenging assignment.”
