Youth in Gauteng have until Sunday, 27 September, to apply for one of 2 500 short-term employment opportunities within the province.

This is according to the Department of Infrastructure and Property Management (DIPM), which kicked-off its National Youth Service (NYS) Programme e-recruitment drive for the 2020 to 2022 financial years.

The NYS programme forms part of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure’s Extended Public Works Programme, which aims to provide poverty and income relief through temporary work for the unemployed.

South Africa’s unemployment, especially among youth, is at an all-time high. The official unemployment rate increased by a percentage point to 30.1% in the first quarter of 2020 compared to the fourth quarter of 2019, according to figures from Stats SA.

Amid the COVID-19-induced lockdown, government has had to step up financial support through a R350 social relief grant, which will be paid monthly to unemployed persons until October.

In a statement, the DIPM says the recruitment drive is taking place solely online, and targets unemployed and unskilled youth with a matric between 18 and 35 years – who are also first-time participants in the programme.

Applicants should reside in Gauteng, come from disadvantaged backgrounds, be in possession of a grade 12 certificate, a valid South African ID, with no criminal record and proof of a bank account, it states.

“Applicants will be required to submit a comprehensive CV, certified original copies of qualifications, including an ID copy. Due to COVID-19 regulations, all applications should be submitted online. No e-mail or hand-delivered applications will be accepted.

“Once accepted into the programme, applicants will have opportunities to be enlisted in various economic sectors, including administration, construction and information technology.”

MEC Tasneem Motara adds: “We call upon all interested candidates who are eligible across the province to submit their online applications immediately in order to be considered for a spot in the programme.

“The online application process is simple and easy to follow. The system has been tested and we are convinced that it is fit-for-purpose and will be able to process as many applications as possible.”
