New Adabas replication agent solves integration tasks

Johannesburg, 07 Sep 1999

The accurate integration of a mounting volume of information in a way that is easy to access and simple to update and maintain is one of new technology`s most daunting tasks.

Notes Sybase South Africa MD, Alan Cowley: "Many large companies are faced with migration of dissimilar databases to a consolidated system, upkeep of customer information across several packages as well as delivery of customer information across new media such as the Internet."

In response to this requirement, Replication Concepts, a division of Sybase SA have released the Replication Agent for Adabas which synchronises Adabas data on a real-time basis with a variety of other databases including MS SQL Server 7, Sybase, Oracle and other ODBC enabled databases.

Working with Sybase Replication Server, Replication Agent for Adabas rapidly makes data available in near real-time to departments throughout an enterprise on the database of their choice.

"Specifically designed for enterprise distributed computing," comments Cowley, "the Sybase Replication Server provides a robust solution for true distributed systems that meet real-world business requirements and supplies a flexible, practical architecture for building high performance, cost effective distributed systems.

The Replication Agent for Adabas was released in June and has already achieved enthusiastic acceptance with installations at ESKOM and the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington.

"Users are able to eliminate lengthy programmed extracts, file transfers, home-grown scripts and other time consuming solutions which ultimately cost the company several times more than originally anticipated," says Cowley.

"Replication Agent for Adabas surpasses current industry offerings for data replication in a mainframe environment," he maintains. "Older architecture for distributed databases rely on two-phase commit technology, which is expensive for normal operations and can stop the entire system upon failure of any component. Other approaches use simplistic snapshot mechanisms rather than a transaction based approach.

Some products require that data is staged before it can be applied at the target site. Working with Replication Agent for Adabas, however, offers both system reliability and transactional integrity."
