Avira is giving a makeover to all its solutions, from the free basic security version through to its flagship AntiVir Professional for business. As well as a new look, all versions will also feature easier user guidance systems to ensure maximum protection.

Furthermore, it is adding a number of new security features - free of charge, of course!

The new interface in Avira AntiVir Version 10 is more minimalist, with more intuitive functions than the previous versions and offering dynamic protection: the generic repair function removes files created by malware and eliminates any harmful elements remaining in the registry.

In future, any malware detected will be reported in unobtrusive "slide-ups" and infected systems will be repaired with a single click. Also included is the ProAktiv function - a behaviour-based recognition-mechanism (Host Based Intrusion Prevention System "HIPS") that uses typical activity patterns to identify as yet unknown malware.

The new features at a glance:

Generic repair (Personal, Premium, Premium Security Suite and Professional versions)

This function is certain to please all those switching to Avira. That's because Avira enables them not only to detect and delete malware like viruses, worms or Trojans, but also to repair damage that has already occurred.

AntiVir ProActiv (Premium, Premium Security Suite and Professional)

AntiVir ProActiv sets up tiny sensors on your PC to continuously monitor the system. Any unusual activity triggers an alarm, meaning that attacks and harmful content can be detected and prevented even when the actual code is so new that it has not yet been identified. This means detection of and protection against tomorrow's security threats, even if they're mutated versions that have never before been seen in the wild.

Extended parental control (exclusive to the Avira Premium Security Suite)

Avira Version 10 makes the Internet safer for your kids. New features include the ability to block more undesirable Web sites, and also to limit the amount of time your children spend on the Net.

New firewall (Professional edition)

The AntiVir Professional version for networks and businesses includes ProActiv, our innovative early-warning system against threats. The new version includes a new firewall as standard in the Professional edition, plus extended functionality for the Security Management Centre, our central management tool.

Avira AntiVir Server (Windows)

The new version of the Avira AntiVir Server (Windows) also detects rootkits and active malware, rounding off its range of detection capabilities in an important new area.

Also new is the option to check offline VMware images for possible virus infections, providing effective protection for servers deployed as host virtualised desktops.

Avira Security Management Centre (SMC)

Version 2.5 of the Avira Security Management Centre delivers further advances towards providing a full range of practically based services. The development has concentrated on automating functions to make the work of administrators easier.

These automated steps include the option to formulate security guidelines ensuring that computers that are automatically added to the security environment have a predefined Avira product installed. The synchronisation of the SMC security solution with Active Directory can now also be automated and implemented at regular intervals. To ensure even more communication between the SMC and the installed agents, the new version also allows separate certificates to be produced and used in the system.

Avira AntiVir Professional/Server Solution (Unix)

New versions of the Avira AntiVir Professional/Server (Unix) solutions are also due in March. These will support packages management from RPM, simplifying installation and administration. The new version also features improved interaction with other systems and the SMC. On the one hand it is now possible to send SNMP traps for security-related processes in the system, while on the other the SMC can also be used to trigger automatic product updates, ensuring that the latest version is always installed. The SMC-controlled updating of the product via an Internet is now also supported. The new version also allows scans to be planned and performed automatically at defined points or at defined intervals (schedule scanning).
