The ISACA South Africa (SA) Chapter recently held a SheLeadsTech networking breakfast session in support of the ISACA SheLeadsTech global initiative. ISACA’s SheLeadsTech programme seeks to increase the underrepresentation of women in technology leadership roles and the tech workforce. The event was hosted at Deloitte in Durban, South Africa. ISACA SA welcomed over 30 attendees to celebrate the day and the month of spring with an inspired and bright sunflower-themed event.
The event was entitled: “Future Tech Workforce: Breaking the Gender Barriers”. Delegates were welcomed by ISACA SA Chair of the Social and Ethics Committee and Director of Candor Governance, Carolynn Chalmers. Chalmers also introduced a video welcome message from ISACA SA President Arlene-Lynn Volmink. Marketing & Communications Director, Nomashni Naidoo, was also present at the event.
This ISACA SA SheLeadsTech event was unique in that, for the first time, ISACA SA opened the event to attendance by both men and women. In doing this, the chapter aimed to recognise the importance of male advocacy while creating awareness and also discussing the importance of female leaders in technology and motivating emerging female leaders in technology.
The event brought interesting topics in technology and dynamic female speakers from the industry to share their knowledge and insights. The first keynote speaker of the day, Dr Tracy Cohen, Director of Business Development at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr, specialises in telecommunications and media law and policy, and has wide-ranging experience in management, regulation, organisational development and governance in the telecommunications and energy sectors. Dr Cohen has worked as both an independent advisor as well as in-house counsel. She has advised on various aspects of regulation, licensing and compliance in the sector as well as regulatory strategy, stakeholder management and engagement. She serves on several advisory boards in the ICT sector and academia.
She delivered a presentation: “The 4th Industrial Revolution: an event or evolutionary journey?” This presentation considered why the ICT industry and policymakers tend to create a perception that the fourth industrial revolution is an event and not an evolutionary journey. The presentation looked at how this has resulted and how we are positioned on the timeline of technology and policy. She also focused on factors such as cyber crime and security.
The second keynote speaker, Dr Trishana Ramluckan, is an academic and researcher in the IT and governance field and has worked in the higher education sector for the past 12 years.
In 2017, she graduated with a Doctor of Administration degree in Information Systems & Technology and Public Administration, School of Management, IST and Governance from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She is currently a Post-Doctoral Researcher in International Cyber Law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s School of Law. Further to this, she serves on the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) working group 9.10 on ICT uses in Peace and War and the Global Commission on the Stability of Cyberspace (GCSC) Research Advisory Group (RAG).
She has contributed to the SABS working group for ISO/IEC standards for information security and is an ISACA South Africa Chapter Academic Advocate at UKZN. She is a reviewer for the International Journal of Cyber Warfare and Terrorism, the Journal of Contemporary Management, the annual International Conference on Cyber Warfare and Security and the annual European Conference on Cyber Warfare and Security. Her presentation was entitled: "International Humanitarian Law in the Age of Cyber Crime and Cyber Attacks!" She concluded with key take-away points, including that:
- Cyber crime and cyber attacks have become increasingly international;
- Local legislation and governance have an international impact;
- Misuse of terms can have legal consequences: journalists, researchers, politicians and consultants need to consider the impact of the terms they use; and
- There is a growing need for organisations to consider international laws and not only national laws and governance.
The programme also included a panel discussion featuring some of KwaZulu-Natal’s leading women in technology; namely panel moderator, Carolynn Chalmers, and panellists, Melanie Gard (Director & Head Chatterbox), Chrystal Austin (Chairperson of KZN Women in Business) and Dané Louw (Deloitte Analytics). The panel discussion was entitled: “Breaking the Gender Barriers”.
A very engaging question-and-answer session took place. The closing was led by ISACA SA Events & Marketing Coordinator, Anri Veldman. She gave a special thanks to Deloitte as the venue sponsor and thanked Carolynn Chalmers for emceeing the session on behalf of ISACA SA.
