AcerCloud a strong differentiator, says Tarsus

Johannesburg, 04 Jul 2012

Consumers are becoming more technology-savvy by the day, and simultaneously, consumer-focused technology brands are coming to realise that they need more than a super-thin and light gadget that boasts an inspired industrial design to capture a buyer's attention.

Take a great looking and performing gadget and throw in worthwhile value adds, such as a quality software bundle, subscription to a worthwhile online service, or a voucher for an accessory, and it's an entirely different story.

So, in an effort to do just that, Acer is preparing to launch an innovative cloud-based storage, backup and synchronisation service as a free add-on to its new breed of Ultrabooks.

“The availability of this service with Ultrabooks is just the start,” says Shane Krog, Acer product manager at Tarsus Technologies.

“Following on AcerCloud's initial availability with the S5 and M5 Ultrabook models, in the second quarter of the year, the offering will become available with all Acer consumer PCs,” he adds.

And according to Krog, AcerCloud securely connects all personal smart devices for anytime, anywhere access.

“That means users' media and document libraries are synced with cloud storage and will be available through that service across all of their connected products,” he says.

Right now, Krog reports that those 'connected products' include Android smartphones and tablets.

“In time, however, third-party Windows-based devices will be added to the mix,” he explains.

Delving deeper, Krog says the service will provide a 30-day online snapshot of users' data across all devices, serving the same purpose as a short-term online backup solution.

“Users will be responsible for downloading any media or documents they want to retain for offline use during that 30-day window,” he says.

“Quite importantly, the service dovetails well with Acer's new 'Always Connect' technology, which allows files to be retrieved from Acer PCs even when in hibernation mode,” he says.

“That really is unique,” he adds, “and provides vital testimony to the fact that Acer really is beginning to understand what makes the consumer market tick.

“The way that Ultrabooks need cloud storage, and furthermore, the way that AcerCloud leverages Acer's unique stance on WiFi, shows that real thought is going into Acer's product design,” he opines.

“We can hardly wait for the next round of innovations to hit,” he concludes.
